2 Connection Doctor Drop Down |
This is the iChat 3 Connection Doctor's Window Drop Down to select the Statistics or the Errors pane. It will be greyed out like this is there is no Error info. It is a grab of just the Drop Down at the top of the Previous picture.
It will display the same info as iChat 1 or 2 but just in a separate pane now.
From this example picture of an iChat 2 Error drop down. The lower bit that says Error log and the messages displayed below will be what you see in the new Pane.
The actual message will depend on how the Chat failed. Both the info here and the Message on the Chat window itself should be used together to establish the cause of the failure as much as possible.
On the whole the messages and error reports in iChat refer to the attempts to connect after the Visible Invite has been accepted. If the Buddy refuses, for instance, the Chat window will say they Declined but there will be no Error message in the Error log here.
If they Mute their Mic for longer than 10 secs in an Audio only chat then you will get the 10 Secs Error message and a Error log like the one on the left.
From other messages and Error logs it can be inferred that ports are not open and similar Networking issues.
Some Background info:- AV chats are VoIP connections. A "Handshake" takes place on both end using the SIP protocol that VoIP connections use. The Error Messages are after that bit has worked but has not resolved in a proper chat. AS has been said earlier you can make an AUdio Chat fail by Muting the Mic so no data is sent. Video chats need the Video Paused and the Mic set to Mute to achive the same thing.
The SIP bit is on port 5060 (or the three next ports that follow to 5063) As you can see in the Error Message the Audio and Video feeds back and forth are over 4 ports. 16386 for Audio and 16384 for Video at the local end. The Buddy's info is missing in this case. It also lists the local IP of the Machine on it's Local LAN (192.168.0.6) and the IP it's Router/Modem is getting from the Internet (90.209.10.1). There is also a Date and Time stamp.
If your Buddy is using a satelite connection they could lose 3 secs just in the time it takes to get up and back to the Satelite like the delays your see on the TV for outside broadcasts.
So... If the computer at either end is not using an internet Clock (System Preferences > Date and Time) there can be issues. If for some reason there is a delay from the Modem/Router to and from the Internet there can be issues (also check it's date and Time settings). If the ports needed are not open in the Firewall the Router/Modem of even it's firewall if it has one as well there can be issues.
That leads us to the Mac Firewall.
