iChat Information Pages

Version 4

iChat Icon

These iChat 4 pages are coloured Gray and have the iChat 4 icon on them that was in use at the time, so you know where you are. The icon differs little from the Version 3 version.

These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Message and FaceTime. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

iChat 4 Pictures Status Messages

You are In:- iChat >> Versions >> iChat 4 >> iChat 4 Pictures Index >> iChat 4 Status Messages Index >> Staus Messages Edit Pane
2[3] 02 Status Messages Edit Pane. Nov 2008

This is the iChat 4 Status Messages Edit point.

By default it does not display this wide but it can be dragged wider if the Buddy list is not too close the the right hand side of the Screen. Both the List boxes will expand to show the full length of the Messages

Chosing the Edit option shown in the previous picture will open this pane.

The Plus sign will allow you to Add a Message to the Away or Available List but will not change your Message. This is so you can create a set of Messages to use Later.

If you highlight one message you can use the - (minus) button to delete it or double click a Message to open it to Edit it.

Smiley as Text

Note on Smileys. You have to type the Keystrokes here and they will display here as the Keystrokes as well but will display when chosen to you and your Buddy as Smileys.

A Change. In Previous versions of iChat the Message you could type in could be longer than 42 Character but only 42 would display at the top of your Buddy list or in your Status Message under your name in your Buddies' list. Now you can enter longer Messages and they will be displayed as wide as the Buddy List is set but dragging it wider will reveal more of it. (If you think a Buddy has long message mouse over his name in the Buddy List and the new style info popup that repalces the Tooltip will display their Buddy pic, their Screen Name and their Status Message in full).

The Message continues to display as a one line entry no matter how long it is - in this Edit mode or in the Buddy List.

Another Change. iChat can be set to Remember any Status Messages you create using the Custom options on the previous screen. Custom ones you write free hand as it were (next picture). However this is now a drop down choice between All or the Last 5, 10 or 20. This is separate from the System wide settings for Recents set for the number of iChats that can be remebered.

Next is the Custom Message Screen

Information Block

This site is about iChat from Version 1 through to iChat 5.x.x
Mostly this is kept as an Historical Document. Some small tense changes have been made but the content is by and large untouched.

It has a mixture of basic info and problem solving help.

The sections below will change for Specifics about info on the page on view

About This Page

This slide that replaces the Status Messages List if you use the Edit option on the bottom of the List screen and can be used to Add new Messages without them becoming the Current one or Deleting old ones or Editing one.

Compatibility

As mentioned above this has had a major Edit/Update in September/October 2024 moving towards being fully HTML 5 compliant meaning that the Browsers listed below are likely to no longer work.

I have tested in Safari 18.1, Firefox 130.x and 131.0, Vivaldi 6.9.3447.48 and iCab 6.2.3 (All Mac Browsers) I don't have access to a PC let alone multiple browsers to test on.

The original pages worked with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later

Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) should/may only see a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely usable.
