iChat Information Pages

Version 4

iChat Icon

These iChat 4 pages are coloured Gray and have the iChat 4 icon on them that was in use at the time, so you know where you are. The icon differs little from the Version 3 version.

These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Message and FaceTime. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

iChat 4 Pictures

You are In:- iChat >> Versions >> iChat 4 >> iChat 4 Pictures Index >> Add Buddies Index >> New Person
2[2] 02 The Slide out. Nov 2008

This is the iChat 4's next pane in the Add Buddy sequence. It appears out of the Buddy list at the top just under the title of the Buddy List

Now matter if you started from the Buddy List or the Buddies Menu or Keystrokes during an active chat you will see this pane.

We will deal with adding AIM or AIM valid names first

This Changed. Mostly the whole layout and process from earlier versions. This picture is when you use the Plus sign in the Buddy List. If you use the Keystrokes listed in the Buddues menu or the Buddies Menu item itself then some items will be prefilled.

MobileMe Drop Down

This also Changed. Account Name. Remains a drop down but has MobileMe added as an Account type. AIM and @mac.com remain choices.

MobilMe selected

Also the way the MobileMe and @mac.com items then appear in the Screen Name text field has changed, making it clearer that you do not have to type the suffix part - as can be seen is this isolated part of the pane.

Was New. As you type the Screen Name into the Account Name text field iChat will try suggestions that have been added to the Address Book already. As it does so it will fill in the First and Last Names if you have them.

Also New. Access to directly add the Buddy to the Group you want has been Added.

If they are a New Buddy and have no entry in your Address Book then you can add First and Last Names if you wish. They will then be added to the iChat Buddy List and the Address Book when you hit the Add Button. If you leave these two fields blank the screen name only will be added to IChat and nothing to the Address Book.

Address Book Expansion

Another New thing. If they already exist in the Address Book the reveal blue triangle will open the slide further with the Address Book link as before rather than being a stage on the way here.

NOTE. The Add Button only become active when you have typed a Screen Name or at least the first letter. There is no Checking if it is valid with the AIM Servers so spelling mistakes will appear in the Buddy List as Off-line Buddies.

Jabber Buddies

Adding Jabber Buddies is exactly the same except that there is no choice as to the Account choice (not even for GoogleTalk buddies as the Accounts Prefernces gives you yourself).

The Next bit is the iChat Menus

Information Block

This site is about iChat from Version 1 through to iChat 5.x.x
Mostly this is kept as an Historical Document. Some small tense changes have been made but the content is by and large untouched.

It has a mixture of basic info and problem solving help.

The sections below will change for Specifics about info on the page on view

About This Page

The Slide and it new multi-function role.

Compatibility

As mentioned above this has had a major Edit/Update in September/October 2024 moving towards being fully HTML 5 compliant meaning that the Browsers listed below are likely to no longer work.

I have tested in Safari 18.1, Firefox 130.x and 131.0, Vivaldi 6.9.3447.48 and iCab 6.2.3 (All Mac Browsers) I don't have access to a PC let alone multiple browsers to test on.

The original pages worked with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later

Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) should/may only see a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely usable.
