These iChatAV (Version 2) pages are coloured Green and have the iChat 2 icon on them that was in use at the time, so you know where you are. The icon differs from Version 1 by having the camera logo added.
These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Messages. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

3 Buddy List Groups Drawer Picture |
This is the iChat 2 Buddy List with the Groups Drawer showing. It has been "PhotoShopped" to protect the innocent and to highlight the drawer itself.
Gropus are new to iChat in this version.
Groups initially needs to be Enabled in the iChat Menu > Preferences > General Section. It also needs to be set to Show Groups in the View Menu for the Drawer to pop out or you can use the Word "Groups" in the middle near the top of the Buddy List.
Not shown in this picture is a Plus Add icon at the bottom of the Drawer.
Clicking on Group gives you access to Edit the name of it. There are several preset groups. They are always listed alphabetically but certain characters such as the * (Star) or - (dash) can reorder the list as in the pic here that uses Stars.
As you can see there is an All Groups option.
The Groups do nothing to order the Budies in the list but disabling a Group will take (hide) those Buddies and make you appear Off-Line to them.
Buddies are added to them by dragging them to the Group you want them to be in (from the Buddy list). They can be added to more than one group.
When iChat 2 came out there was a Limit on the number of the Buddies you could have and this was 200 people. However having a Buddy in two groups meant they got counted twice.
Next Picture will be The Text Chat Window
