When you Start Up iChat for the first time it runs through some Start Up Screens starting with this Screen. This is the same Screen as the previous picture but with the details filled in.

I have used my everyday AIM name and selected the AIM Type of Account in the drop down in the middle.

The details at the top are the Mac User Account (Test) details I was using.

If you are trying the Sign Up for Mac.com Button it will not work as Apple have changed to MobileMe and the .Mac service pages have been taken down.

If you have got an Apple name from their MobileMe service enter it as a AIM type of account name but type the @me.com bit as well.

This is not another Screen as such. It is the previous picture filled in with some details.

Care should be taken to make sure you choose the right Type of Account to enter the details under at the drop down in the middle.

Compatibility

Confirmed to work with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later

Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) should only see a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely usable.
